Matadores too fast, too furious for the Dons

The Matadores came out swinging offensively and laid down eight three’s in the first half alone, “When it goes in, we are a three-point shooting team, when it doesn’t go in it hurts us at times,” Coach Randy Oronoz of La Mirada put it.

Sophomore guard #3 Julien Gomez started the Matadores off with their first five points of the game. Gomez finished with 16 points in a complete performance. (more)

Former Mayor Pete Dames passes away

Former Mayor Pete Dames passed away this morning at 12:40 a.m. MST in Arizona after apparently suffering a stroke there last week while visiting family.

It is with an extremely heavy heart that I am having to report this as I sit here staring at my keyboard upon hearing the news.

He was involved in so many civic, service and educational organizations that it would be impossible to list them all here.

Mr. Dames was on the La Mirada City Council from 1994-2010, serving as mayor four times.

He also was the freshman coach for La Mirada High for many years; past-president and a charter member of the La Mirada Athletic Council, lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Knights of Columbus; the 605 football classic and board member of the La Mirada Youth Foundation and a main organizer of the "4 La Mirada Kids" carnival for the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada. (more)

The La Mirada Planning Commission will host a public hearing Thursday to discuss zoning ordinance changes that have been requested by the developer behind a proposed 12,000-square-foot, sustainability-focused mixed-use commercial center.

YF Synergy, which is working to build The Grand at La Mirada project at 13525 S. Beach Blvd., has asked the city to make several amendments to Title 21 of the city’s zoning ordinance.

Billed as the city’s “most sustainable commercial project to date,’ the two-story commercial center would include restaurants, retail shops, an express vehicle washing facility, office space, eight electric vehicle charging stations and ample bicycle parking, according to a statement from the developer. Today's and this past Saturday's release were not initially scheduled-the registrar’s regular post-election update schedule is normally every Tuesday and Friday.

In the NLMUSD race, only 311 votes separate the top four candidates, with that pack seemingly pulling away from the field.

It is unclear how many ballots are left to be counted; four seats are up for grabs.

The registrar is tentatively scheduled to certify the election by Dec. 5. (more)
