Beware of Grant Deed Scams

Norwalk~Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean Logan joined Assemblymember Ted Lieu, L.A. County Assessor Robert Quon and Riverside County Assessor-Clerk Larry Ward at a press conference this week to remind Los Angeles County residents that property documents such as Grant Deeds are readily available to them through the RR/CC for a small fee. The press conference warned the public of recent mailings sent to homeowners by third party private companies soliciting a fee for copies of their Grant Deed.

Logan said, "In these economically difficult times, when homeowners are challenged and people are trying to make ends meet, it is important that our residents are adequately informed about the services available to them in order to protect them from unnecessary or deceptive solicitations like these."

Biola University Breaks Ground for New Talbot Building

La Mirada~Biola University broke ground for its new Talbot East Building this morning at 11:30 A.M.  The ceremony was marked the "Miracle of May 2010" in commemoration of the miraculous influx of funds during a community-wide 40-day fast for the project's funding.

On March 16, Biola President Dr. Barry Corey asked students, faculty, and administration to commit to fasting one meal over the next forty days.  Since that time, a total of more than $6.4 million has been amassed through generous donations.  More than 80% of that number came in within the first five days of May, moving up the expected date for breaking ground on the project, originally scheduled for June 1.  Money was slow in coming, according to Dr. Barry Corey, during the last year and half.  As of last March, only around $9.2 million had been raised.

City Manager Says State Being Irresponsible

La Mirada~The La Mirada Redevelopment Agency will lose $4,839,372 next week and another $995,391 next year as a result of a court decision upholding State budget actions.  These funds will not be returned to La Mirada.

The combined total of $5,834,763 is equal to about 18 percent of the City's General Fund Budget, and is more than the salaries of the City's entire full-time staff for a one year period.

The State Budget approved by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in July 2009 called for a $2.05 billion raid on local redevelopment funds to pay the State's bills.
