Transportation Funds Drop for La Mirada in 2010-11
La Mirada~La Mirada will ask for less funding in its application for transit and transportation funds this fiscal year.
The City Council approved the city's application for funds on Tuesday, which will utilize around $2,397,751 in transit and transportation funds for the 2010-11 fiscal year, a 16 per cent drop from last year when they utilized $2,856,416.
"The difference between last year's request of funds of $2.8 million and the amount requested this year of $2.3 million is due to the change in the federal funding area," city manager Tom Robinson said.
He attributed the drop in funding requests to the one-time funds for vehicle replacement, tools and equipment for La Mirada Transit that the federal government granted last fiscal year.

City Approves Budget
La Mirada~Faced with unprecedented revenue losses from the economic recession and State takes of local funds, City officials have developed a balanced response to budgeting for the 2010-11 fiscal year. The budget was prepared using conservative revenue forecasting, and calls for $2.1 million in spending reductions. Future spending containment, user fee adjustments, and the use of some reserves are also included. Total revenues are estimated at $63,955,234.
The City's General Fund budget of $30,986,655 reflects a 7.7 percent decrease over the prior year, due to various cuts across City departments. While the budget includes a 10 percent dip into the General Fund reserve, or $1.46 million, it projects year-end reserves to be $6.5 million more than the level designated for emergency purposes.
While substantial reductions in staff and other costs are included, no municipal services will be eliminated. The City will also continue to contract for many of its services to reduce costs.
The City continues to fund municipal services without using a utility users' tax or supplemental sales tax, which are used by most cities in the area. La Mirada remains one of the few cities in California which has never levied a municipal property tax. While no new revenue measures are proposed for this budget, further economic deterioration in the future may require City officials to reconsider some form of new revenue measure as recommended recently by the Citizens Task Force on City Finances and Operations.
A Dedicated Community Member Leaves Us
La Mirada~All of us at the La Mirada Blog, along with the rest of the La Mirada community, are very saddened about the recent news of the passing of Bob Jenkins of La Mirada.
Jenkins died Tuesday morning after a short battle with Luekemia. He was diagnosed in May.
He courted and married his wife Jeanette, who used to work at the old La Mirada Columbia Savings.
A very active, long-time community resident, business leader, and servant, Jenkins among other endeavors was the President of the La Mirada Community Services Foundation; chairing the "4 La Mirada Kids Carnival" the last few years. He was also very involved with the Relay for Life, motivated by personal loss.
Jenkins was an early supporter, believer, and contributor to the La Mirada Blog. Because of Jenkins confidence in us, we strived to make ourselves more relevant. I can never thank him enough.
Our prayers are with his wife Jeanette, and the entire Jenkins family.

Beware of Grant Deed Scams
Norwalk~Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) Dean Logan joined Assemblymember Ted Lieu, L.A. County Assessor Robert Quon and Riverside County Assessor-Clerk Larry Ward at a press conference this week to remind Los Angeles County residents that property documents such as Grant Deeds are readily available to them through the RR/CC for a small fee. The press conference warned the public of recent mailings sent to homeowners by third party private companies soliciting a fee for copies of their Grant Deed.
Logan said, "In these economically difficult times, when homeowners are challenged and people are trying to make ends meet, it is important that our residents are adequately informed about the services available to them in order to protect them from unnecessary or deceptive solicitations like these."
