Splash! Into the New Year at the Polar Bear Plunge
La Mirada~The word "Plunge" enjoys a special sentimental place in the hearts of people who have lived in La Mirada for a long period of time.
It now takes on a new meaning.
Take the plunge into the cold waters of Buccaneer Bay at Splash! on New Year’s Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The third annual Polar Bear Plunge will allow those daring enough to be among the first in 2010 to plunge down the 25-foot waterslides into an unheated catch pool.
Adventurers will receive a photo taken of the plunge down the slides, hot chocolate, and admission to recreational swim in the heated 25-yard pool from noon to 5 p.m. The adventure is available for $5 and is free for 2010 season pass holders.
Those who prefer warmer waters can enjoy the heated 25-yard pool from noon to 5 p.m. at the cost of $3 for adults and $2 for children and seniors. Hot chocolate, coffee, and mochas will be available for purchase.

La Mirada~The 2009 Knabe Katch almost didn't happen this year, but thankfully, last month, it did. The annual fishing derby, in its 13th year, usually takes place in August, but had to recheduled to November this year because of sick ducks and a biologically unhealthy La Mirada Lake. |
25th Annual Kiwanis Holiday Shopping Spree
La Mirada~With Christmas fast approaching, many La Mirada families are facing difficult financial circumstances. Sometimes, it can be tough to determine the best ways to lend a hand, but La Mirada Kiwanis has continued to find a way, year after year.
On Tuesday December 8th,La Mirada Kiwanis Club, in partnership with Sears and Ruby's Diner in Whittier, will be hosting their annual Holiday Shopping Spree to assist some of the city's economically challenged youth. Following the shopping spree, the children will be treated to breakfast at Ruby's and a visit from Santa!
This Tuesday's event will be the 25th annual, assisting 50 children selected from La Mirada schools. Each will be matched with a chaperone, and they will spend the morning shopping for new clothes at Sears and enjoying a tasty breakfast from Ruby's.
For some children, Tuesday will be the only day that they can purchase new clothes all year. Each child will have $100 to spend.
Trying to Ensure Everyone Has a Merry Christmas
La Mirada~The City of La Mirada's Annual Holiday Toy and Food Drive will run through December 14. New, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items will be accepted for distribution to local children and families.
All food donations collected will help to prepare holiday food boxes that many families depend on for a wonderful holiday dinner. There are many families throughout the area who would not receive gifts and food for the holidays without the generosity of others in the community.
Donated items will be collected at City facilities including Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center, La Mirada Resource Center, La Mirada Activity Center, the Community Gymnasium, and the La Mirada Community Sheriff's Station.
Toy and food items will be presented to some of the following local organizations for distribution: Beatitudes of Our Lord, the La Mirada Volunteer Center, St. Paul of the Cross, and Interfaith Food Center.
Cerritos College Community Education Offers Motorcycle Classes
Norwalk~Are you interested in learning to ride a motorcycle? Cerritos College Community Education offers the Basic Motorcycle course on the weekends, all year long.
The 15-hour course consists of three classes over two weekends, which includes one day of classroom learning and two days on the bikes practicing skills. Bikes and helmets will be provided. A current driver's license or permit is required to sign up for the class. The classes start every week so one can begin any time at one's convenience.
The cost is $250 for those over 21 and $150 for those under 21. Upon successful completion of the course the students will receive a waiver from the driving portion of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) riding test.
Cerritos College Community Education also offers other motorcycle classes such as the Experienced Rider Course for those who have a motorcycle license but would enjoy a safety review. Cerritos College to Host Vocational Programs Informational Fair
Norwalk~Cerritos College’s Career Center and Re-Entry Resource Program will host the first Vocational Programs Informational Fair on Thursday, November 5, 2009.Attendees can learn about vocational and short-term certificate programs offered at Cerritos College. Representatives from the departments and programs will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about their offering and career opportunities in each field.
Participating departments include: Computer & Information Sciences, Cosmetology, Court Reporting and Captioning Careers, Culinary Arts, Mental Health Worker, Nursing, Photography, Woodworking and many more.
Hours of the event will be from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Cerritos College Falcon Square, 11110 Alondra Blvd. in Norwalk.
This event is FREE and open to the public. Parking for the event is free in lot C-1 in white stalls ONLY.

Real Estate News-Inspections vs. Appraisals
Q: Do I need a house inspection when my bank is having the house appraised?
A: Yes! A house appraisal is an independent evaluation of the current market value of a house or property. In general, the purpose of an appraisal is to set the current value of a house so that a lender may determine how much it can loan to the buyer. The appraiser looks at similar properties in the area and the prices at which they were sold to set the value of the house.
A house inspector conducts a thorough evaluation of the houses major systems and structural integrity. Whereas the appraiser is typically working for the bank, the house inspector is working for you. The house inspector identifies items that need replacement or repair prior to closing, which can save you thousands of dollars.
U.S. Department Of Housing And Urban Development (HUD) requires buyers sign a Consumer Notice advising them to get a house inspection in addition to a house appraisal before purchasing a house with a FHA mortgage. Additionally, HUD now allows homebuyers to include the costs of appraisal and inspection in their FHA mortgage.
Red Ribbon Week- “Drug Free is the Key”
Whittier~“Drug Free Is the Key” is the theme for the 21st annual Red Ribbon Week.
Co-sponsored by the SKILLS Foundation and the City of Whittier, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually by local schools and youth groups to support a drug-free community.
Kicking off the event will be the 21st Annual Pancake Breakfast and Community Rally, which will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday, October 24 at East Whittier Middle School, 14421 Whittier Boulevard.
The $4 per person breakfast (children 3 years and younger are free) includes pancakes, sausage and beverages.
Along with breakfast, families will be entertained by local schools and organizations, and there will be informational booths and displays promoting a drug-free lifestyle. There will also be chances to win prizes such as electronics, amusement park passes and restaurant gift cards.
Whittier Hosts 7th Annual “Celebrating Abilities” Expo
Whittier~“Celebrating Abilities,” the seventh annual Expo and Celebration of Disabilities Awareness Month, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2008 at Parnell Park, 15390 Lambert Road, Whittier. All community members are invited to come to this free event to learn more about how Whittier is working to become accessible to all residents.

Cerritos College Volleyball Doing a Dig Against Breast Cancer
Norwalk~When you say October, you would think Halloween, Columbus Day or falling leaves. But October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And Cerritos College women’s volleyball team will be joining for the first year in Side-Out’s Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally to raise funds and breast cancer awareness in the community.
This fall, thousands of teams from around the country will be participating in Dig Pink to promote Breast health education as well as raising funds to help eradicate Breast Cancer.
“It’s a neat way to get us together for a great cause,” said Teresa Velazquez, head volleyball coach at Cerritos College. “Students, family, friends and the community can help a good cause while supporting the team.”
Dig Pink attendees will watch the women compete on the court while contributing the breast health awareness by wearing pink in the stands and making a donation at the door. Dig Pink t-shirts can be purchased for $10 at the Physical Education Department. Order form is available here.
Every home game in October will have 50/50 raffles in which 50% of the proceeds go to the Side-Out Foundation and the other 50% will be prize. Or, even if you cannot make it to the games, you can still make a credit card donation at the Cerritos College Page on the Dig Pink Web site by going to www.DigPink.org, selecting the Colleges link under 2009 Team Summary and selecting Cerritos College.

The Side-Out Foundation is an organization that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research nationwide through tournaments, clinics, and rallies. This is where the goal of $2,500 in proceeds and donations set by the Cerritos College “Dig for the Cure” campaign will benefit the Side-Out Foundation, a national 501 (c)(3).
