On Friday night, the La Mirada Matadores (13-6) lost 70-69 on a buzzer-beater to the Campbell Hall Vikings (10-5).

It was junior guard Baron Bellamy for the Vikings who made the put-back shot to help lead Campbell Hall to the silver division title at The Classic at Damien.

The Matadores played a little uncomfortably in the first half, being down by 10 at the half. They clawed and fought back into the game, eventually taking the lead with 11 seconds left in the game on a layup by Sophomore guard Julien Gomez.

However, Bellamy had other plans and knocked in the game winner.

La Mirada had two of the top players in the tournament with sophomore guard Julian Gomez and senior guard Sean Cervantes picking up all-tournament awards. Both players were top scorers for the Mats in the final with Gomez having 35 points and Cervantes chipping in 10.

La Mirada’s pre-league schedule has led them to a 13-6 record, with two tournament finals appearances. They played some really tough opponents and four games in the last five days. They now get to rest until Wednesday, January 4th when they travel to take on the Paramount Pirates in their first Gateway League game.

The Matadores look to win back-to-back league titles.
