CITY NEWS

Following a closed session discussion at its October 10 City Council meeting, the City Council voted to join Whittier, Downey, Santa Fe Springs, and many other cities in pursuing an injunction and restraining order against the implementation of the Superior Courts’ pre-arraignment release protocols.

Under this new schedule, individuals arrested for a variety of misdemeanors and non-violent felonies may now be cited and released with a notice to appear in court without any assessment of risk to the public. This poses a potential threat to the safety of the community.

The new bail schedule, which began October 1, applies to a broad range of offenses including car thefts, car burglaries, thefts of property of any value, retail and commercial thefts and burglaries, possession of stolen property, forgery, and drug sales among other crimes.

In certain cases, individuals who pose a greater risk for committing crimes, including sexual battery, crimes against children or elders, contact with minors with an intent to commit a sexual offense, and those involving guns, a “magistrate review” will be conducted electronically by an on-call judge to assess whether immediate release with a notice to appear in court is more appropriate than jail.

Former Chamber Director and City Councilman have exchange on X

Former La Mirada Chamber of Commerce Director Dustin Dahl and La Mirada City Councilman Anthony Otero traded barbs on the social media platform X this past Tuesday regarding the business climate in La Mirada initiated by Dahl. Read the exchange below and I'll have my translation later.

City of La Mirada - what is going on with Imperial and Santa Gertrudes? Worst gas station in the city, RiteAid going out of business, 7/8 empty business locations 🤷🏽 Where is district 5 city councilman? What’s the plan?@CityofLaMirada @LaMiradaBlog @PastorJack5 @LMDistrict5

Otero: Right here. RITE AIDE is in the process of a bankruptcy restructure and is closing stores - a private business that we as a city have no control over. The gas station, again is a private business. They meet the business requirements to do business in the City.

Dahl: This is the same story every councilman in the city the past 20 years has been saying. “Private businesses we can’t do anything” So what’s the plan? Let it all go to s***? Is that the plan.

Otero: Never said nothing can't be done. The City will have the business development director keep attending the business engagement/development events. Imperial Highway is a relatively busy street which is a primary requirement for most businesses/Chains to consider.

Dahl: This intersection just did not happen overnight. Years in the making. Maybe doing the same thing as YOU suggested is not the right approach. Clearly not working. And honestly, if that’s your solution district 5 in LM is in trouble. No disrespect, but maybe hire a consultant.
