Free Symphony Concert-The Pops are Back

On Sunday May 19, the La Mirada Theatre stage will come alive with the voices of Natalie Salins and James Salazar as they embark on a musical journey through Hollywood at the highly anticipated pops concert.

Both artists will be on stage with the symphony in an unforgettable afternoon of some of the best music from cinema, showcasing their unique styles and chemistry.

This concert is a must-see for anyone who appreciates the powerful impact of skilled vocalists sharing their art.

The conductor Alan Medak will discuss the music during the concert. There will be no concert pre-lecture.

Concert begins at 3:00 p.m. This is a free event. Tickets are not required.

School News

-The Board of Education and the Superintendent of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District cordially invite you to the grand opening of the new Goodman Stadium at La Mirada High School, Thursday May 23rd from 4:30-5:00 p.m.

-La Mirada High School will host a skilled trades program for high school and middle school students this summer for the third year in a row. The high school students will learn advanced welding techniques and earn industry-based certifications before mentoring middle school students who will learn basic welding skills. The program, which is funded by Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, starts on June 10.

-The La Mirada High School Class of 2024 Graduation Ceremony will take place at the new Goodman Stadium on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:00pm. A ticket is required for entry.

-Hutchinson Middle School Math Science Technology Magnet officially earned its designation as a 2024 California Distinguished School.

-And you thought he was just the La Mirada High School softball head coach. In 10 years, Brent Tuttle has established, from scratch, an award-winning welding program at the school. Along with a summer camp series, it presents opportunities for students to jump-start a trade and/or teaching career.

City News

The La Mirada City Council conducted a reorganization at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, May 14, following the recent resignation of former Mayor Andrew Sarega. Mayor Pro Tem John Lewis was selected to serve as Mayor for the 2024-25 term. Councilmember Ed Eng was selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tem. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem each serve one-year terms.

Also serving on the City Council are Steve De Ruse and Anthony Otero, who were re-elected to four-year terms beginning in March 2024.

City Manager Jeff Boynton indicated the process for replacing Sarega, more than likely would be on the agenda for the May 28th meeting. A special election has been set for November 4, 2024.

Community Curator

-Bruce Dixon was recognized recently at the Los Angeles County's Older Americans' Recognition Day event at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Bruce is very active and a friendly face in La Mirada, involved in Volunteers on Patrol, CERT, and HAMWatch. We’re sure you’ve seen him around!

-Join Camp Tiny Tots this summer! The weekly program offers a day camp experience for participants ages 3.5 - 5 years. This summer adventure will offer a variety of fun and creative activities including water play, arts and crafts, games, STEM activities, and special group activities all in a well supervised environment.

Camp Tiny Tots runs from June 10 through August 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is $163 per week. Extended care is available between the hours of 7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. for an additional cost. Space is limited! Please call (562) 943-7277 for more information.

Memorial Day Remembrance

A Memorial Day service honoring those who have served in our nation’s Armed Forces will be held on Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at Olive Lawn Memorial Park, located at 13926 La Mirada Boulevard. The service will feature special presentations, guest speakers, a tribute to fallen soldiers, and the placing of floral wreaths by the La Mirada City Council, community organizations, and Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary. This Memorial Day service is presented by the La Mirada Veterans Coordinating Council, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9148, and the City of La Mirada.
