Police arrested a man and two teens immediately following a “smash-and-grab” robbery at a jewelry store at the Whittwood Town Center shopping mall in Whittier on Monday, officials said. The suspects were being investigated in connection with a series of recent similar crimes throughout the region.

The ill-fated robbery took place about 11:50 a.m. at Daniel’s Jeweler’s, 15582 Whittwood Drive, inside the Whittwood Town Center, Whittier Police Department Lt. Dominic Iraldo said.

Three robbers smashed open display cases and helped themselves to jewelry, he said.

Whittier police officers arrived at the scene as the suspects were fleeing through the parking lot in a getaway car.

Due to reckless driving, officers “felt the need to intervene,” according to the lieutenant. An officer crashed a police vehicle into the suspects’ car before they were taken into custody.

The adult suspect was identified as Daevon Perion Conley, 21, of Los Angeles, according to police and Los Angeles County booking records.

The identities of the juvenile suspects were not released due to their age. They were taken to a juvenile hall.

The stolen jewelry was recovered, Iraldo said.

Detectives were investigating the suspects’ possible connection to to other recent “smash-and-grab” jewelry robberies, including ones in Huntington Beach and Santa Ana in recent days, according to the lieutenant.

Federal officials had also joined the investigation, he said.

Conley was released from custody Monday evening after posting $50,000 bail, records show.
