Bellflower 31 Artesia 7: The Buccaneers walked into this game with a chip on their shoulder, and they got rid of it by destroying the Pioneers defense. The Pioneers, who I believed to be a league contender, just can’t seem to get it together as they lost their fifth game of the year. The Buccaneers ground game got rolling as they churned out more than 330 yards on the ground. Lorreone Wright and Benny Perez both went over a 100 yards as they paved the way for their first win of the season.

Week 5 Preview:

La Mirada has a bye

Bellflower vs. Mayfair: This is going to be a tough game because it’s a rivalry game. The Buccaneers always seem to raise their level of play against the Monsoons. I look for Evan Hunko to play huge and eat up the Buccaneers secondary. I also look for Jeremy Allen to keep the Buccaneers in the game as long as he can, but he can’t do it alone this week.  Look for Benny Perez to try and steady the rushing attack. But, it won’t be enough to stop the Monsoons, who win their 52nd straight game in league.

Cerritos vs. Artesia: Some one finally gets there 1st win of the season as the winless Pioneers play host to the winless Dons. I think that Marquis Moss will have the best game of his high school career to date, and lead the Dons to their first win of the season and finally get the losing monkey off their back. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, and senior QB Anthony Johnson, they get another loss, and try to figure out how to get a win. Dons finally win! That’s my prediction.

Norwalk vs. John Glenn: The Eagles are playing wounded and what has shown in their first few games of league is they are not a very deep team. They play hard but they just tire in the second half of games. This is the city rivalry game, and it has more than just league implications. The kids that play in this game get city bragging rights. The unique twist on this game is that former John Glenn Alumni Ernie Gutierrez, has worked hard to get the freshman game played before the Varsity, as it turns into a community event. The freshmen game will take place at 4 pm on Friday and the varsity kickoff is at 7pm. I look for this to be a battle. If the Eagles can stop the Lancers offense, they have a chance. And, I believe the Eagles passing game can be a problem for the Lancers defense. We will see how this one turns out, but I take the Lancers, who have not lost to the Eagles since 2002. Glenn has had four coaches since Joe Parra beat the Lancers and led the Eagles to the playoffs. Coach Wilson looks to break that streak and lead the Eagles to the city championship and CIF.

Final Thoughts: The League is shaping up to be very intense, and in our division we look to have some very tough teams. This week, I look for the Dons to get their first win, and if the Gods of Chance are with the Eagles, then they beat the Lancers. The Matadores have the bye as they prepare for Mayfair next week. The team that wins that game will take a step toward the league championship. I wish you all much success; and stay injury free.
