Sarega maintains narrow lead in La Mirada City Council race as counting winds down
The two leaders in the race for La Mirada City Council District 2 remained separated by only four votes Friday, with only one week of ballot counting remaining.
Incumbent Andrew Sarega had received the most tallied votes at 570, or 34.36%, according to data released Friday by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder's Office. (more)
Three arrested following smash-and-grab jewelry heist at Whittier shopping center
Police arrested a man and two teens immediately following a “smash-and-grab” robbery at a jewelry store at the Whittwood Town Center shopping mall in Whittier on Monday, officials said. The suspects were being investigated in connection with a series of recent similar crimes throughout the region.
The ill-fated robbery took place about 11:50 a.m. at Daniel’s Jeweler’s, 15582 Whittwood Drive, inside the Whittwood Town Center, Whittier Police Department Lt. Dominic Iraldo said. (more)
House fire erupts on Alicante Road
A house fire occurred earlier this afternoon around 1:30 p.m. along the 15200 block of Alicante Road In La Mirada.
The fire was knocked down with 30 minutes as units from area Los Angeles County Fire Department stations in Cerritos, Norwalk and Whittier responded. (more)
Lack of peace clouds La Mirada election cycles
I have an Olive tree in the front yard and it’s wild.
There are a couple other olive trees way up Hesse Drive, but they’re tame, trimmed like a Bob Ross afro and circled by brick planters. Domesticated.
I have the only wild olive tree on Hesse Drive.
The city of La Mirada has history with this species, the Greeks had a long name for it and La Mirada being a tree city, somebody needs to look up the long name.
Our 62-year-old city replaced a ton of olive groves according to resident historians Ray Fernandez and Tony Aiello, who say a bunch of olive oil was famously produced here.
The owner of this website got really pumped up, as historians are prone to get, when the original oil press from the La Mirada olive groves recently surfaced in Campo, CA. Where?
But enough dendrology, let’s talk about the symbolism of my wild olive tree and being a preacher; let me throw in some Bible. (more)
Candidates for La Mirada City Council face off at forum
The three competitors vying for a seat on the La Mirada City Council in the upcoming June election took part in a forum Thursday to share their visions for a better city.
District 2 incumbent Andrew Segara is being challenged by Chris Pflanzer and David Constantine. The election is to take place in conjunction with the statewide primary election on June 7.
The hopefuls laid out their plans and priorities on a range of issues ranging from public safety to term limits during their first public debate.
Each of the three candidates made their case as to why they are the best person for the job. (more)
Memorial Day Service at Olive Lawn
The City of La Mirada and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9148 invite the community to its 62nd Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Olive Lawn Memorial Park, 13926 La Mirada Boulevard.
The Service will include vocal and other special tributes to fallen soldiers, guest speaker Major Ed Choi and the placing of memorial wreaths and flowers by the VFW Post 9148 and Auxiliary, the City of La Mirada and community organizations including Ebell, Kiwanis, Rotary, and Union Army of the West. Campo~Although the Dichiara family was based in La Mirada for only around 20 years, they will forever hold an integral part of its history.
La Mirada city founder Andrew McNally created and built his olive oil empire, the first industry in La Mirada, beginning in the late nineteenth century and well into the twentieth.
The factory where he processed the fruit was located on his Windermere Ranch and at one time produced some of the finest, purest oil available in the world.
When the Long Beach earthquake struck in 1933 it damaged the building and production was halted. (more)

On April 2nd, La Mirada welcomed the grand opening of the new Farmers Market, and judging by the early sold-out produce, food, and crafts of several vendors, we are optimistic that the weekly event will evolve into a long-term community meeting place and valuable resource for our residents. Please come support this Farmers Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking area near the La Mirada Activity Center. (more)
Man found shot after car crash in La Mirada; homicide investigation underway
Detectives launched a homicide investigation after authorities discovered a man found dead at the scene of a car crash in La Mirada has been shot on Sunday afternoon, officials said.Deputies first responded to a car crash about 12:20 p.m. in the 13000 block of Valley View Avenue, according to Deputy Raquel Utley of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Information Bureau. The lone occupant of a vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Suspect arrested in series of armed robberies at SoCal Walgreens stores
Deputies arrested a man earlier this week who they say is responsible for at least six armed robberies at Walgreens pharmacies in La Mirada, West Covina, Baldwin Park, Monterey Park, San Dimas and Corona last month.
Deputies arrested the 29-year-old suspect Tuesday while carrying out a search warrant at his Moreno Valley home, according to Sgt. C. Hinojosa of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's La Mirada Special Assignment Officers team.
